FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for his part in the murder of a Nova Southeastern University professor.

A Broward County judge sentenced 24-year-old Randy H. Tundidor on Friday. He pleaded guilty in August to a reduced charge of second-degree murder.

Authorities say Tundidor and his father, 46-year-old Randy W. Tundidor, broke into the home of professor Joseph Morrissey in April 2010. Morrissey was the Tundidors’ landlord and in the process of evicting the family. The younger Tundidor testified during his father’s trial this past spring that the father stabbed Morrissey. The home was then set on fire while the victim’s wife and son were in a nearby bedroom.

A jury recommended the death penalty for the elder Tundidor in October.
